How it works
Go to: Tabs | Invoices | Employer Benefits | Bulk Netting
Tabs
A running tab for over-the-counter purchases — coffee, groceries, dinner, fuel, anything bought at a participating merchant. Much like a pub tab, settled later.
Buy at a participating merchant
Put the purchase on your Company Tab Card in the mobile app. No cash transferred.
Confirmed in the app
The merchant confirms on the same device in seconds without need for expensive terminals.
Settled the following week in bulk
Every tab from the week adds up into one total. One transfer settles all of it — no per-purchase cash transfers. And using Bulk Netting where possible (see below).
For the merchants
No card fees, no terminal fees, no setup cost. Every WageTab transaction for the week settles in a single payment. And this could be a good way of attracting new customers.
Invoicing
Invoices for company purchases, agreed in person using the app, with any payment term of choice.
Agree the invoice, in person
Both parties confirm the invoice in the app using the Company Invoice Card — the amount, and the term, whether that’s 10 days or 90 days.
It sits until its due week
Unlike a tab, an invoice doesn’t settle the following week — it settles in the week it falls due, however far out that is.
Settled in bulk, on its due week
When the invoice’s term is up, it’s added to that week’s bulk settlement, alongside any tabs due the same week. And using Bulk Netting where possible (see below).
Flexible changes
Any party can delete the invoice and create a new one — no separate dispute or edit process to navigate.
Employer Benefits
A running tab for wage earners, offered by their employer, settled from wages at payday.
Staff spend at participating merchants
Both parties confirm the invoice in the app using the Company Invoice Card — the amount, and the term, whether that’s 10 days or 90 days.
Settles from wages at payday
Unlike a tab, an invoice doesn’t settle the following week — it settles in the week it falls due, however far out that is.
A buffer builds
When the invoice’s term is up, it’s added to that week’s bulk settlement, alongside any tabs due the same week. And using Bulk Netting where possible (see below).
The employer sets the rules and controls
– Selective rollout — offer it to specific teams or roles first.
– Spending caps — set a max tab for period, weekly, and per tab.
– No overruns — staff can’t exceed their approved limits.
The accounting treatment: when an employee spends on their tab, the employer’s wage liability to them simply changes form — it becomes a payable to the merchant instead. Same dollar, different creditor. The tab settles the following week, as a payable. One extra line on the payslip — there’s no added payroll complexity.
Bulk Netting
Every tab and invoice owed this week adds up into one bulk payable. Everything owed back adds up into one bulk receivable. Then the two are netted off — only the difference needs to be transferred.
Example: a business owes $5,000 across this week’s tabs and invoices, and is owed $4,000 from other participating companies. Bulk payable, bulk receivable, netted down to one $1,000 transfer.
One net transfer, weekly
Simplify reconciliations
Less chasing payments
Reduce counterparty risk
Lower transaction and labour costs
Reduce funding needs
Free up working capital
Improve cashflow forecasts
If it can all be netted — tabs, invoices, wages, and your wider AR/AP — the cash flow problem that comes from managing everything gross disappears to the same extent. Forecasting becomes simpler too, because there’s only a net position to plan around.
Common Questions
Why Free
“Linux runs most of the internet, and nobody pays to use it — it’s infrastructure, not a product. WageTab is built the same way. The tabs, the invoices, the netting engine — that’s infrastructure. It stays free.”
Dr Richard Johnsson
Founder & CEO
Netting Engine
“Get paid earlier, and someone else just gets paid later — a win-lose. The win-win is to net off payments obligations, and settle just the difference. Banks have done this for 200+ years. That’s what I want to offer to everyone.”
